President Daniel Chapo aims to strengthen cooperation between Mozambique and Uganda in the fight against terrorism, which has affected Cabo Delgado province since 2017, highlighting Uganda’s experience in this area.
According to Lusa, speaking to journalists in Kampala on the sidelines of Yoweri Museveni’s inauguration for a new presidential term, Daniel Chapo stated that Uganda has extensive experience in combating terrorism and can play an important role in supporting security efforts in Africa.
“Uganda is a country we can count on at the continental level to help combat the terrorism we are facing in Cabo Delgado province,” declared the Mozambican head of state.
Daniel Chapo also recalled the historical ties between the two countries, noting that the Ugandan president is very familiar with Cabo Delgado, particularly the district of Montepuez, where he received military training in the past.
In addition to security cooperation, the Mozambican president advocated for deepening economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries. “The goal is to increasingly strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, especially since our historical ties must be further consolidated to achieve the economic development we seek,” he added.
Cabo Delgado, a province rich in natural gas, has been facing armed attacks since October 2017, in an insurgency that has already left thousands dead and displaced in northern Mozambique.
Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, was sworn in on Tuesday (the 12th) for his seventh consecutive presidential term, after winning the January election with 71.65% of the vote, in a process contested by the Ugandan opposition.
