President Begins Visit to Portugal With Meeting With Mozambican Diaspora in Porto

President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, meets this Monday (8) with the Mozambican community living in the city of Porto, in northern Portugal, marking the first item on the official agenda of the working visit that runs until Tuesday (9), the date of the 6th Bilateral Summit between the two countries, as reported by Lusa.

According to estimates from Mozambican authorities, around 10,000 Mozambican citizens currently reside in Portugal. The meeting with the diaspora will take place in a hotel in Porto and is part of Daniel Chapo’s second visit to Portuguese territory in five months, following his inauguration last January as the fifth President of the Republic.

The visit takes place ahead of the 6th Mozambique–Portugal Bilateral Summit, scheduled for Tuesday, also in Porto. According to a statement from the Presidency, the summit aims to deepen political and economic cooperation, promote mutual investment and consolidate business partnerships, with emphasis on strategic sectors such as finance, public administration, digitalisation and renewable energies.

The signing of legal cooperation instruments in areas such as education, health, agriculture and energy is also planned. The summit will be attended by the Portuguese prime minister, Luís Montenegro, and a group of 22 ministers from both governments.

During his stay, Daniel Chapo will hold a private meeting with the Portuguese prime minister, during which both leaders are expected to discuss matters of common interest, including the political, economic and social contexts of each country, within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations.

The Head of State will also participate in the opening session of the Economic Forum organised by the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), a side event to the summit scheduled for Friday. The initiative aims to boost business opportunities and revitalise economic cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal.

The Presidency considers this visit an opportunity to deepen the political dialogue that has characterised relations between the two countries, as well as to strengthen the bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation that unite Mozambique and Portugal.
