President Begins Official Visit to Italy to Strengthen Strategic Cooperation

The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, began on Wednesday (10) a three-day working visit to Italy, aimed at strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The trip follows the conclusion of the 6th Luso-Mozambican Summit, held in Portugal, and is part of the government’s diplomatic efforts to promote strategic partnerships with European countries, according to the Mozambican News Agency (AIM).

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the central objective of the visit to Italy is to deepen political, economic, and commercial cooperation, with particular emphasis on attracting investment and consolidating ongoing key projects. A private meeting is scheduled between the Head of State and the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, during which the current status of bilateral relations will be assessed and new areas of common interest explored.

Following the meeting between the two heads of state, official talks will take place between the delegations of both countries, focusing on promoting joint initiatives in culture, education, economic cooperation, and sustainable development. During this visit, Mozambique aims to present concrete partnership opportunities in strategic sectors such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

The agenda also includes a high-level meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. This meeting is considered crucial for strengthening economic relations between the two countries, in the context of the Mattei Plan—a development support package for Africa promoted by the Italian government, in which Mozambique is among the priority beneficiaries. The plan envisages significant investments in key sectors of Mozambique’s economy, with particular focus on agro-food and energy value chains.

During the visit, President Chapo will also meet with entrepreneurs and representatives of major Italian conglomerates in a private sector forum dedicated to promoting investment opportunities in Mozambique. Highlighted will be the agro-food center project in Manica Province, financed by Italy and valued at €35 million, considered a benchmark in modernizing the national agricultural sector. The official program also includes a visit to the Sant’Egidio Community, an Italian organization with a long history of cooperation with Mozambique, particularly in social, humanitarian, and peace-promotion areas. A business coffee meeting with Italian entrepreneurs is also scheduled to share experiences and present opportunities in the Mozambican market.

The visit will conclude with the signing of legal instruments for bilateral cooperation and a meeting with the Mozambican community residing in Italy, in a moment aimed at consultation and strengthening ties with the diaspora, which the Head of State considers an integral part of the national development process.
