Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, on Friday 20, called on universities to find concrete solutions to the country’s problems, considering a commitment to research and the extension of higher education essential in the sector’s contribution to socio-economic development.
‘Mozambique is crying out for higher education that participates in and catalyses the economic, social, cultural, artistic, technological and scientific development of communities,’ said the Mozambican head of state during the investiture of the rector of the Pedagogical University, Jorge Ferrão, and vice rectors José Castiano and Gustavo Dgedge.
Higher education must be ‘relevant to our needs, which promotes inclusion, equity, equality, as well as ethics, a culture of work, a culture of peace and love of country’, he added.
University graduates, the extension of higher education and scientific research must produce solutions that help solve the concrete problems of communities, declared Filipe Nyusi.
‘We Mozambicans want higher education institutions to generate solutions to the country’s real problems,’ he emphasised.
Jorge Ferrão, former Minister of Education, was sworn in for a second term as rector of the Pedagogical University, a state institution and one of the oldest in higher education in Mozambique.
