The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, called on the police to guarantee security and tranquillity on polling day, which will take place on 9 October, as part of the seventh general elections (presidential, legislative and provincial).
‘The police have the role of guaranteeing an electoral campaign and a peaceful and safe vote,’ said the statesman during the closing of the sixth course for sergeants of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), at the General Oswaldo Assael Tazama Sergeants School, in the district of Nhamatanda, Sofala province, in the centre of the country.
Nyusi said that Mozambicans, through the electoral administration bodies, political parties, observers and civil society organisations, are in the ‘final phase’ of preparation for the ‘exercise of democracy and citizenship’, stressing that there must be ‘tolerance at all levels’.
‘We call on everyone involved in this process to continue carrying out their activities in a spirit of tolerance and respect,’ he emphasised.
According to figures from the National Electoral Commission (CNE), more than 17 million voters are registered to vote, including 333,800 registered abroad.
Running for the Presidency of the Republic are Daniel Chapo, supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Ossufo Momade, supported by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Lutero Simango, for the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), and Venâncio Mondlane, a former Renamo member and MP, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), a movement without parliamentary representation.
