The government has announced an investment plan to improve service provision in the country’s courts. The decision was announced by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi during the ceremony to reappoint Adelino Muchanga for a new five-year term as president of the Supreme Court, the country’s highest judicial body, as reported by the newspaper Noticias.
According to the head of state, the investment will go towards strengthening the operational capacity of the courts, including improving infrastructure and the ongoing training of judicial magistrates and members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
This measure aims not only to guarantee the efficiency and effectiveness of judicial services, but also to strengthen citizens’ confidence in the justice system, consolidating the democratic rule of law in Mozambique.
President Nyusi emphasised that, despite budgetary restrictions, the justice sector has made significant progress in recent years. The territorial coverage of district courts has increased from 138 in 2019 to 164 in 2023, and the number of judicial magistrates has risen from 369 to 515, with the goal of reaching 731 by the end of the year.
The new investment is also intended to support the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in its mission to improve technical and operational skills, with the aim of raising the quality of the services provided. In addition, the Executive will promote the revision of court fees, the improvement of community courts and the financial independence of the judicial system.
This package of measures is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that the judicial system is prepared to face current and future challenges, respecting the constitutional principles and international commitments made by Mozambique.
