New Government: Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic Available to Support Political Dialogue

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Mohamed Sidati, announced on Friday 17 January in Maputo that his country is interested in strengthening historical relations with Mozambique and helping to mediate political dialogue to end the general demonstrations.

‘The Mozambican President presents a message of friendship, happiness, solidarity and support for the process of democratic dialogue. It seems an unavoidable dream that can lead to maximum stability, prosperity and development for Mozambique,’ he said after an audience granted to him by the head of state, Daniel Chapo.

‘We have just been received by His Excellency Daniel Chapo, Mozambican President, to wish the Mozambican people, government and state all the best, and to strengthen the bonds of friendship, cooperation and solidarity,’ said Sidati.

Mozambique and the Saharawi have enjoyed relations of friendship and co-operation since their struggle for national liberation. At the meeting, the Arab leader said that ‘one of the aspects that drew his country’s attention was the speech by the new Mozambican President, who brought other forms of struggle for development that, in his view, can lead the country to prosperity, economic, political and social stability.’

SADR is recognised by 80 other states and has been a full member of the African Union (of which Morocco is the only African country not to be a member) since 1984, but is not recognised by the UN, which considers Western Sahara to be one of the last ‘non-self-governing territories’ in the world.
