The Russian Embassy in Mozambique has called on its citizens living or present in the country to stay at home until 19 January, due to ‘the high probability of unrest’ following the contestation of the results of the 9 October general elections and the inauguration of the new Mozambican President, Daniel Chapo.
‘Due to the instability of the internal situation in the Republic of Mozambique and the high probability of internal unrest, we recommend that you do not leave your homes until the end of this week,’ said the note quoted by Carta de Moçambique.
In the document, the Russian diplomatic service said that staying in the house should be observed between 13 and 19 January. ‘At the same time, we advise you to have drinking water, food, fuel, medicine and money in case of need.’
Mozambique is going through moments of great tension, due to the ‘paralysation’ and ‘peaceful demonstrations’ promoted by the second most voted presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane. During the actions, more than 400 people died and hundreds more were injured.
Recently, Mondlane called for three days of stoppages and demonstrations, starting on Monday, contesting the swearing in of the elected members of Parliament and the investiture of the new Mozambican President.
