Post-Election Tension: ‘Political Meetings Are Essential for Reforms’ – PR

The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, said that the political meetings that have been taking place in recent days are fundamental for the consolidation of peace, stability and the implementation of structural reforms in the country. Nyusi was speaking this Thursday (9) on the sidelines of a meeting with political parties, which was also attended by President-elect Daniel Chapo, according to the newspaper O País.

During the meeting, Chapo reiterated his commitment to peace and to promoting reforms aimed at accommodating the interests of the Mozambican people. The President-elect highlighted the need to improve the electoral legal framework and deepen the decentralisation process, aspects that have been widely debated in the post-election context.

‘Today we have reached a commitment to continue working towards reforms, which are one of the main objectives of the Mozambican people, represented here by the political parties. We are talking about reforms linked to the electoral law, the improvement of the decentralisation process and the possible revision of the Constitution, to better accommodate the interests of the Mozambican people,’ said Chapo.

The President-elect also said that there is already a consensus on the formation of a working group that will form part of the technical commission in charge of perfecting all the reforms mentioned. However, he reiterated that the focus will continue to be on maintaining peace and the sustainable development of the country.

Asked about the possibility of a dialogue with Venâncio Mondlane, one of the main faces of the opposition, Chapo clarified that the dialogue table is open, but stressed that, at the moment, the process is taking place at party level.

The meetings between the Mozambican President and the political parties take place in a context of post-election tension, marked by demands and calls for reforms to the electoral system. Dialogue has been identified as the preferred way to guarantee stability and ensure that the democratic process continues to evolve in Mozambique.
