Portuguese FM Replies to Mondlane’s Criticisms in “Constructive Spirit”

The Portuguese foreign minister emphasised that he would ‘always be available’ to talk to all political forces, including the opposition, and to civil society in Mozambique.

Minister Paulo Rangel has already reacted to the statements made by defeated candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who accused him on Tuesday of partiality and of ‘manipulating’ public opinion by saying that he has been following the post-election process in Mozambique.

In a note sent to SIC, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs says that he stands by everything he said in Monday’s interview on SIC Notícias‘ Edição da Noite,’without removing a single comma’

‘The minister stands by everything he said, without taking out a single comma (…), in order to preserve the profoundly constructive spirit with which he goes to Mozambique,’ he began.

Rangel also said that he would always be available to talk to all political forces and civil society in the country, including opposition political forces.

What’s more, he said: ‘He is always available to talk to all political forces and civil society. Moreover, contacts with the political forces of the opposition are planned.”

‘He’s always been biased’

Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane accused Paulo Rangel of partiality and of ‘manipulating’ public opinion when he said that he had been following the post-election process in Mozambique.

“There is no work done on your part in relation to dialogue in Mozambique. On the contrary, you’ve always been partial, you’ve always had totally sad positions, you’ve always used adjectives against me,’ said Venâncio Mondlane, addressing Rangel directly from his official Facebook account.

The minister is expected in Maputo on Wednesday to represent the Portuguese government at the inauguration of Daniel Chapo as the fifth Mozambican President, according to the election results proclaimed by the Constitutional Council (CC), which Venâncio Mondlane does not recognise.
