Portugal and Mozambique Strengthen Dialogue Ahead of 6th Bilateral Summit in 2026

The Government of Portugal announced this Monday (23), in Maputo, the strengthening of political dialogue with Mozambique in preparation for the 6th bilateral summit, scheduled for 2026.

The assurance came from Ana Isabel Xavier, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, who is in the Mozambican capital to take part in the celebrations of Mozambique’s 50th independence anniversary. During her visit, Xavier was received by Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Lucas.

“We want to intensify our political dialogue and, in the coming weeks, take concrete steps so that in 2026 we can hold the sixth summit, delivering tangible and useful results for both countries,” Ana Isabel Xavier told journalists after the meeting with the Mozambican minister.

It is worth recalling that at the last bilateral summit, held in Maputo in September 2022, Portugal and Mozambique signed 18 agreements and memorandums covering sectors such as agriculture, education, justice, health, heritage, culture, the Portuguese language, and support for economic development in Cabo Delgado.

During this visit, the Portuguese official reaffirmed Lisbon’s commitment to strengthening existing areas of cooperation, highlighting security and defense as top priorities. “More than opening new fronts, it is essential to reinforce what has worked well. Security training, the Portuguese language, economic development, and investment are areas that unite Mozambique and Portugal, and we want to deepen them even further,” emphasized Ana Isabel Xavier.

She also highlighted the presence of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at Mozambique’s independence jubilee celebrations, stressing that both countries share “a history and a shared journey” that reinforces the importance of continuing to invest in a close bilateral relationship.

The 6th summit between Portugal and Mozambique is expected to take place in 2026, continuing a cycle of high-level meetings aimed at consolidating increasingly close cooperation between the two nations.
