Podemos Bench Arrives in Parliament With Ambition for Change

The deputies of the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos) take office this Monday, 13 January, in the Assembly of the Republic, pledging to represent Mozambicans in this new legislature.

According to the newspaper O País, many of those elected admitted that when they registered as candidates, they had little expectation of winning a parliamentary seat. However, what motivated them was their faith and their desire to bring about change in the country, regardless of the circumstances.

The new Podemos bench will be made up of 43 deputies, making it the second largest force in the Assembly of the Republic. Among the future parliamentarians, some will be meeting for the first time when they take office and recognise their inexperience in legislative activity. Even so, they are determined to make their mark in Parliament.

One of the new MPs, Mangaze Felizardo, 27, elected for the Manica constituency, said that he had never been to Maputo before and that, when he stood as a candidate, he didn’t have high expectations of being elected. However, he revealed that his motivation had always been to contribute to concrete changes.

Another first-timer in the Assembly of the Republic will be Carlos Tembe, a pastor and former member of the municipal deliberative body through Juntos Pela Cidade. With four consecutive elections at local level, Tembe now faces the challenge of joining the national parliament and hopes to apply his experience to legislative work.

Also among the deputies who will take office is Atija Mussa, a trader elected from the Nampula constituency, who could be a member of the Assembly of the Republic’s Standing Committee. Speaking to the newspaper, Atija emphasised that she intends to focus on key issues such as job creation and access to housing, which she considers fundamental for the population.

With the new parliamentary composition, the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique is taking on a more prominent role in the Assembly of the Republic. Its deputies, although many are first-timers, guarantee that they are prepared to face the challenges and actively contribute to the debate and scrutiny of public policies, with the aim of driving significant changes in the country.
