Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General Congratulates Mozambique Presidency of the UNSC

On Monday, 3 April, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mozambique congratulated Mozambique on its historic Presidency of the UN Security Council. He also took the opportunity to recognize the work that has been done in building peace in the country.

MozParks is proud to have played a part in Mozambique’s peace efforts through its MozYouth initiative. By providing internships to family members of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) beneficiaries and ex-combatants, MozParks has contributed to building a sustainable future for these young people and to supporting a lasting peace.

MozYouth is a training programme based on employability, entrepreneurship, and professional skills development, and with a focus on gender equality. It offers internships to young Mozambicans, ranging from those without formal education to university graduates. Over 50% of MozYouth participants have already secured work contracts. MozYouth co-founders include MozParks, First National Bank (FNB), Hollards Group, Syrah Resources (TWIGG Exploration & Mining) and DP World. It is supported by TotalEnergies, and the Swiss, German and Irish governments.

The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mozambique issued the following statement “I warmly congratulate Mozambique on its successful historic first Presidency of the United Nations Security Council. Over the past month Mozambique has had the opportunity to showcase to the world their unique experience in building peace. They led discussions on important topics including Women, Peace and Security, counterterrorism and Silencing the Guns, cementing their well-deserved seat, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

I echo the words I shared with the Security Council on the 30th of March, “silencing the guns and embracing dialogue is becoming a Mozambican way of doing things, and that is essential for lasting peace”. Mozambique has shown us what can be achieved through negotiated solutions  and the country serves as an example to the world of the possibility of resolving armed conflict  through dialogue.

As we build on these gains and consolidate and capitalize on peace and national reconciliation, I reaffirm the United Nations commitment to continue supporting Mozambicans in their pursuit of a better future and lasting peace for all.”
