The Mozambican President , Filipe Nyusi, on Friday 25, highlighted Cuba’s solidarity during the covid-19 period, saying that the country’s support had helped prevent the Mozambican health system from collapsing.
“Our health system didn’t collapse partly because of your understanding, solidarity and support in sending us doctors, specialists and technicians,” said Mozambique’s head of state.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking today in Maputo during a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, who arrived in Mozambique today for a two-day visit.
The Mozambican President thanked Cuba for its support during the “difficult and delicate time” of the pandemic, expressing an interest in increasing the training of health professionals and technical specialists, as well as co-operation in other areas.
“Specialisation in Cuba is a world reference in terms of high-quality health training, with higher values of commitment and work,” said Filipe Nyusi.
Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Cuban President, emphasised the stability of the links between the two countries in the area of health, noting that Saturday marks 46 years since the arrival of the first Cuban medical brigade in the country.
The act “means a lot to the more than 350 professionals currently working in Mozambique and the usefulness of their work,” emphasised Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The Cuban President’s visit comes as part of a trip to Africa to take part in the summit of the BRICS bloc of emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which took place in Johannesburg between the 22nd and 24th of this month.
Miguel Díaz-Canel also visited Angola and is expected to visit Namibia.
