Number of Public Prosecutors Increased By More Than 60% in the Last Five Years

Over the last five years, the Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (CSMMP) has seen a significant increase in the number of magistrates, from 466 in 2019 to 774 this year.

The same trend can be seen in the territorial coverage of bailiffs, which went from 1,249 in 2019 to 1,691 today.

The information was revealed by the Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, speaking this morning in Maputo City at the swearing-in ceremony for the new members of the CSMMP.

‘In terms of the management of magistrates and judicial officers, we have strengthened our territorial coverage, currently having 774 magistrates and 1,691 judicial officers, compared to 466 and 1,249 respectively in 2019,’ she said at the ceremony.

He highlighted the approval of organisational instruments governing the functioning of the CSMMP.

‘With regard to functioning and internal organisation, several instruments were approved, including resolutions on the organisation and functioning of the Superior Council and the expansion of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and criteria for assessing the professional merit of judicial officers and assistant judicial officers, which undoubtedly contribute to the better performance of our body,’ he said.

‘These and other actions are a sample of the great contribution and impetus that (magistrates) have given and will certainly continue to give to the development of the Public Prosecution Service,’ he added.

On the occasion, he also acknowledged the contribution of the outgoing members to the development of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and challenged the 15 new magistrates who took office to act with ‘rigour, competence, impartiality and impartiality in order to maintain the CSMMP as a privileged institutional body that guarantees confidence to the users of justice’.
