Tilapia production in the districts of Mandimba and Majune, in Niassa Province, exceeded 170.3 metric tons during the first half of this year, as part of the Small-Scale Aquaculture Development Project (PRODAP). The initiative aims to strengthen food security, generate income, and create employment opportunities for local communities.
The results were presented this Tuesday (30) by Niassa Governor Judite Massengele during the closing ceremony of PRODAP, a project funded by the government and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation with a total of approximately $1.2 million.
According to the governor, this production volume was achieved thanks to the construction and stocking of 768 excavated ponds with 256,000 fingerlings, as well as the installation of 49 floating cages in the districts covered by the project.
In addition to boosting aquaculture production, PRODAP focused on capacity building for the beneficiaries. In total, 42 young people and women received training in aquaculture and entrepreneurship, with the goal of developing the skills needed to manage the activity.
To support the producers, 28 metric tons of fish feed were also distributed, contributing to increased production and the sustainability of aquaculture in the beneficiary communities.
PRODAP was created with the goal of improving communities’ livelihoods through aquaculture, while promoting food security, income generation, and new employment opportunities.
Fish production has been playing an increasingly important role in Niassa Province, with aquaculture serving as a key strategy to diversify communities’ sources of income and increase the availability of fish, and PRODAP is contributing to this effort in the districts of Mandimba and Majune.
