The private sector in the northern province of Niassa intends to set up a macadamia processing plant in the Chimbunila region, in order to stabilise the value chain and profit margins for the various players involved in the production of this export crop.
The managing director of Niassa Macadâmia, a company based in the district of Chimbunila, who was speaking during a meeting that brought together various entrepreneurs involved in the production of this fruit rich in nutrients such as fibre, protein, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and vitamins, stressed the need to urgently mobilise financial resources to build a factory to process the kernel, which would be the first in this province.
For William Prado, a factory could “help strengthen the value chain, bring the market closer to potential buyers and guarantee the use of its waste for the production of organic fertilisers”.
“We reiterate our appeal to national and foreign investors to finance the construction of an industry to process macadamias as soon as possible, as it is a crop with lower production costs and, when produced and processed, its kernels offer various derivatives locally with a practically guaranteed market for their commercialisation,” said William Prado, quoted by the newspaper Noticias.
According to Prado, Niassa currently has extensive degraded and unused areas due to factors related to the weak financial capacity of those involved in agricultural production.
“The recovery of these areas by the productive sector, particularly in the macadamia area, could have a positive impact on the province’s economy, on biodiversity and on job creation for the population,” the source emphasised.
