Nampula: Nearly 5,000 Displaced Students to Take Special Exams Between 19 and 22 January

A total of 4,928 students from the sixth, ninth, and tenth grades, coming from the districts of Memba and Eráti in Nampula province, will take special exams for the 2025 school year between 19 and 22 January, the Mozambican News Agency reported.

The information was provided on Thursday, 8 January, in Nampula city by the provincial Director of Education, William Tunzine, during a press conference to present the preparations for the process.

According to Tunzine, 107 exam centers have been created—95 in Memba district and 12 in Eráti—to accommodate students displaced due to terrorist attacks that occurred in the past months of 2025. “We have prepared the exam papers, and some children are already being assisted, as our colleagues, the teachers, are present in these schools. We also count on the support of several organizations providing psychosocial assistance to the children,” Tunzine stated.

The provincial director clarified that the process of identifying the students is still ongoing in the field. “Out of approximately four thousand students, we have already identified 2,907. The work continues, which means our colleagues and cooperation partners remain in the communities to mobilize families so that these children can take the exams,” he said.

Tunzine also mentioned the possibility of opening a new exam center in another district affected by the resettlement of displaced families. “This week, we received information that in Nacarôa district there are some families resettled due to terrorism. There is a possibility that we may also create another exam center there,” he added.

He explained that holding the exams before the start of the next school year is essential, given the school calendar. “The 2026 school year begins on 30 January. It is necessary to assess these children before classes start, so they have enough time to register for the next grade, as the enrollment period has already begun,” he emphasized.

According to the Provincial Directorate of Education, the exam centers will be located in Mazua, Chipene, and Lúrio in Memba district, as well as in Nagoro and Alua in Eráti district.
