The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) signed on Tuesday (9) a memorandum of understanding establishing the MobiMZPT Program, a bilateral initiative aimed at developing sustainable mobility and transport solutions between Mozambique and Portugal, according to an official statement.
The agreement was signed in the context of the Portugal-Mozambique Summit, strengthening cooperation between the two countries in education, innovation, scientific research, and technical capacity-building, in line with the objectives defined in the 2022-2026 Strategic Cooperation Program.
According to the document, MobiMZPT includes the “creation of a cooperation platform for sustainable mobility, the organization of international seminars, and the implementation of a postgraduate program in Transport Engineering and Management in Maputo,” as well as the promotion of advanced research projects involving both Mozambican and Portuguese institutions.
MPDC also highlights the social aspect of the agreement, through its academy—the company’s Training and E-learning Center—which will host higher education training programs provided by FEUP, including initiatives aimed at training Mozambican trainers. This commitment, according to the company, seeks to consolidate “a sustainable legacy in the sector.”
For João Cuna, MPDC’s Human Resources Director, “this partnership represents a decisive opportunity to enhance the technical skills of young Mozambican professionals and create a solid foundation for a safer and more sustainable future in Mozambique’s transport sector.” With this signing, MPDC and FEUP reaffirm their commitment to a long-term strategic cooperation, grounded in innovation, skills development, and the promotion of sustainable solutions to address challenges in the transport sector.
