The Council of Ministers of Mozambique on Friday “favourably” decided to hold the seventh presidential and legislative elections and the fourth provincial elections on 9 October 2024, the Presidency of the Republic announced in a statement.
According to the information, the decision resulted from the VII meeting of the State Council, which took place today, under the chairmanship of the Head of State, Filipe Nyusi, under the “obligation” of that body “to pronounce on the convening of general elections”.
“In this context, on the proposal of the National Elections Commission, contained in deliberation No. 54/CNE/2023, of 26 July 2023, the Council of State pronounced itself favourably on the holding of the Seventh Presidential and Legislative Elections and the Fourth Elections of Members of the Provincial Assemblies and Provincial Governors, for 09 October 2024,” the statement reads.
The Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique establishes, in its article 165, that it is the responsibility of the Council of State, “in general, to advise the President of the Republic in the exercise of his functions”, and mandatorily to pronounce on the calling of general elections.
Filipe Nyusi, also leader of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), has been President of the Republic since 15 January 2015, having been reappointed for the second and final constitutionally prescribed term five years later.
Mozambique enters a new electoral cycle this year, with local elections on 11 October and general elections in 2024 – which should include district elections.
However, through a one-off revision to the Constitution, promulgated today by the President of the Republic, district elections have been postponed until “the conditions for their realisation are created”.
