The National Human Rights Commission of Mozambique and the Monitoring Forum of the United Nations (UN) Universal Periodic Review Mechanism signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday (10) in Maputo to prepare the country’s participation in the 4th Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights. The review is scheduled to take place this year in Geneva, Switzerland.
The initiative is part of the preparations for the international review promoted by the UN, a mechanism that analyzes the performance of states in promoting and protecting human rights. The process also allows for the identification of the main challenges faced by countries in this area.
The 4th Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights will bring together several states, which will present the progress achieved and discuss difficulties in implementing international recommendations. The mechanism provides a space for dialogue between countries and international institutions responsible for promoting human rights.
In the case of Mozambique, the assessment takes place in a context where the country continues to face challenges in promoting and protecting human rights. These issues will be analyzed during the assessment session, within the framework of this international UN mechanism.
To strengthen national preparedness, the Monitoring Forum of the UN Universal Periodic Review Mechanism and the National Human Rights Commission decided to formalize an institutional agreement. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two entities during the evaluation process.
The president of the National Human Rights Commission, Albachir Macassar, explained that the memorandum aims to improve coordination between the institutions involved. According to him, “the agreement aims to strengthen institutional cooperation in monitoring and implementing the international recommendations resulting from the process.”
