The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has confirmed payment of the first month of subsidies to transport operators, following a verification of licensed carriers and in the wake of fuel price increases that took effect on 7 May. However, a portion of the sector declined to participate in the support scheme.
The municipalities of Xai-Xai, Inhambane, and Chimoio informed the government that they would not join the transport subsidy programme, opting instead to raise passenger fares.
According to newspaper O País, the verification process for licensed transport operators is being conducted under audit oversight, and the verification will need to be repeated ahead of subsequent subsidy payments. Meanwhile, several other municipalities have yet to provide information on whether they intend to participate in the scheme.
Following three months of subsidy payments, a monitoring system is to be installed across the transport network to enable better oversight of fuel-related expenditure.
The Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations confirmed that the first month of subsidies had been disbursed and offered an explanation as to why the scheme does not currently cover inter-district and inter-provincial transport services.
The government, for its part, said it had received a proposal from the Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations regarding inter-provincial fares, which have not yet been formally approved. The information was disclosed at a press conference convened by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics to provide an update on the status of transport subsidy payments.
