The Mozambican government has announced the creation of the 'Pro-Mulher' project, a financial initiative designed to guarantee credit and financing for women entrepreneurs across all districts and municipalities in the country, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the economic empowerment of women.
The announcement was made during a community meeting in Maputo Province, where the financial management and savings capabilities of Mozambican women were also highlighted as a significant factor in driving economic and social development.
The initiative was accompanied by a call to eradicate domestic violence, in a context where the government is seeking to reinforce the economic and social conditions of women across the national territory.
At the same meeting, the government issued a warning regarding weather forecasts for the next agricultural production cycle in central and southern Mozambique, which point to a possible reduction in rainfall associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
To mitigate the effects of drought and protect food security, the government announced a package of measures, including the urgent opening and repair of boreholes for potable water, as well as the distribution and promotion of drought-resistant agricultural crop varieties.
The government also announced plans to strengthen the 'Hortas no Quintal' — 'One Family, One Garden' — programme, which aims to encourage households with access to water to grow their own vegetables and other food for consumption.
Among the additional measures is an incentive for the rearing of heat-resistant small livestock, particularly goats, with the objective of reducing the potential impact of drought in affected regions.
In light of these forecasts, the government urged the population to prepare their fields in a timely manner and to adopt preventive measures in order to minimise the impacts of a potential rainfall deficit.
The government also assured that it will continue to work in partnership with communities to address the effects of drought and contribute to social and economic stability.
