The Mozambican government has announced that 11,700 Mozambican workers were placed in foreign labour markets during the first half of 2026, representing a 32% increase compared with the same period in 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action.
In the equivalent period of 2025, 8,851 Mozambican citizens secured employment abroad. The 11,700 placements recorded in the first half of 2026 therefore mark a year-on-year increase of 32%, reflecting continued growth in the deployment of Mozambican workers to international markets.
Of the 11,700 migrant workers, the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action said 9,626 travelled to South Africa, 2,077 to Portugal, and 13 to the United Arab Emirates, among other destinations.
The figures confirm South Africa as the primary destination for Mozambican workers abroad, followed by Portugal and the United Arab Emirates.
The data were presented by Paulo Beirão, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action, at the opening of the 11th National Conference on Labour Migration, held under the theme ‘For a Fair and Sustainable Labour Migration’.
The conference took place on Monday, 3 August, at the administrative post of Chidenguele, in the district of Mandlakazi, Gaza province, bringing together representatives from various institutions to discuss the challenges of labour migration.
