The Minister of National Defence, Cristovão Chume, announced on Friday, June 30, that the country will start cooperating in the training of the Malawi Defence Forces, as a result of the deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries, in the areas of defence and security.
According to the source, the Malawian forces will soon be trained at the General Armando Emílio Guebuza Higher Institute for Defence Studies, adding that “they will also be received at Mozambique’s naval academy.
Speaking in the city of Blantyre, during the 15th meeting of the Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security, the minister also said that, through the naval base on Lake Niassa, the country would carry out maintenance on Malawi’s defence and security vessels.
“These are actions that will encourage the two countries to work in an environment of mutual trust and cordiality, with one and only objective, united by a cause, which is the fight against organised crime,” he said.
The meeting took place over three days (28, 29 and 30 June) and brought together defence and security officials from Mozambique and Malawi, whose mission was to identify new strategies for action, to respond to the current security challenges facing the two neighbouring countries.
The ministerial meeting was co-chaired by the Mozambican ministers of National Defence and Interior, Cristóvão Chume and Arsénia Massingue, respectively, as well as by the Malawian minister of Internal Security, Ken Zikhale Ngoma.
