The Head of State, Daniel Chapo, declared that the country is experiencing an era of political and social stability and “renewed hope,” despite the terrorist attacks taking place in northern Mozambique, particularly in the province of Cabo Delgado, calling for international support to address the situation.
“After a year in office and with the firm implementation of the 12 commitments made to our people, which began with the first 100-day plan, we can say with conviction that Mozambique is now experiencing an era of political, economic, and social stability and renewed hope,” he said.
When receiving greetings from the diplomatic corps accredited in the country at the Ponta Vermelha Palace in Maputo, Chapo recalled that he took office on January 15, 2025, at a time when there were “violent demonstrations that destroyed property, causing unemployment, but also terrorism and extreme events.”
“A clear sign of this stability was Mozambique’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) gray list on money laundering in October, classified as an important milestone for restoring international confidence, attracting investment, and strengthening the foundations of economic independence,” he said.
On that occasion, the President of the Republic explained that despite the attacks and destruction, the country has been investing in infrastructure reconstruction, humanitarian aid, and social reconciliation, aware that peace can only be consolidated when people live with dignity, security, and hope.
“We therefore reiterate our appeal for solidarity and continued support from the international community in tackling this scourge and, above all, for the humanitarian assistance we have received when our populations are displaced,” he appealed.
Since October 2017, Cabo Delgado—a province rich in natural resources, particularly gas—has been the scene of an armed insurgency that has already caused thousands of deaths and led to a humanitarian crisis with more than one million internally displaced persons.
In April 2024, the attacks also spread to the neighboring province of Niassa. One of the most serious incidents occurred in the Niassa Reserve and the Mariri Environmental Center in the district of Mecula, where non-state armed groups attacked facilities, stole goods, destroyed camps, and an aircraft belonging to the park. These acts resulted in the deaths of at least two people and led to the displacement of more than 2,000 individuals, 55% of whom were children.
