Mozambique will host, starting Monday, May 4, and over the course of a month, a series of cultural, academic, sports, and business events promoted by Portugal to strengthen bilateral ties and exchanges.
“We have scheduled a series of academic and institutional events designed to deepen mutual knowledge, reinforce creative exchanges, and strengthen the historical, cultural, and human ties that unite the two countries,” said Portugal’s ambassador to Mozambique, Jorge Monteiro.
Quoted by Lusa, the diplomat stated that the initiative “Month of Portugal in Mozambique,” being held for the first time, will take place from May 4 to June 10, adding that the goal is for it to become an annual event.
Monteiro highlighted that, taking advantage of the celebrations of World Portuguese Language Day, activities will be held at Mozambican higher education institutions such as Eduardo Mondlane University and Pedagogical University of Maputo, as well as at the Portuguese School of Mozambique. The program will also include a fado concert featuring Portuguese and Mozambican artists, including musical collaborations that bring together different generations and styles.
“We want to promote a language that unites more than 300 million people worldwide and serves as a tool for the international projection of both countries and their peoples,” he said. The program will run for about a month and a half, with weekly events taking place in Maputo and other regions of the country.
Planned initiatives also include exhibitions, book presentations, academic debates, European film screenings, and concerts with Mozambican artists such as Stewart Sukuma and Portuguese singer Cuca Roseta, reinforcing the cultural dimension of the program.
The agenda also features the Portuguese Gastronomy Week, with participation from restaurants in Maputo, and a friendly sports tournament between Portugal and Mozambique, reflecting the role of sport as a bridge between peoples.
“It is an eclectic and comprehensive program. Part of the activities will also be decentralized, with initiatives planned on Mozambique Island, expanding the geographical reach of the program to an area where Portuguese cooperation is strongly present,” he added.
According to the ambassador, the “Month of Portugal in Mozambique” follows the latest bilateral summit between the two countries, held in Porto on December 9, 2025, and is part of ongoing efforts to deepen political, cultural, and economic relations.
