The Mozambique Bar Association criticized on Thursday, September 4, the country’s low level of development, stating that Mozambique’s continued position among the poorest nations in the world constitutes a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights. The organization argues that development must be recognized and guaranteed as an inalienable right.
This position was expressed by the Bar Association president, Carlos Martins, during a symposium on the Right to Development, which included participation from political parties.
On the occasion, Martins lamented that the natural resources in the national territory are not being used for the direct benefit of the population, highlighting the urgent need for government action.
“It is unacceptable that Mozambique continues to be among the poorest countries in the world when it has abundant resources that should translate into social well-being,” stated the Bar Association president, emphasizing that the lack of essential services such as health, education, and adequate housing reflects the absence of effective policies committed to human progress.
The Mozambique Bar Association reaffirmed its view that development cannot be seen as a privilege but as a right that must be promoted and protected by all state institutions.
