Mozambique and Ukraine Strengthen Ties With Embassy Opening in Maputo

The Ukrainian government opened an embassy in Maputo this Monday (15) with the aim of further strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“The opening of this diplomatic representation will help strengthen relations between the two sides, so we’re here to introduce ourselves to the highest Mozambican leaders,” explained the deputy minister and special representative of Ukraine for Africa and the Middle East, Maksym Subkh.

He emphasised the “very deep bonds of friendship and partnership. “That’s why we’re sure that the opening of the embassy will open a new page in our relations in various fields.”

In the same context, Maksym Subkh met with the Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, to whom he conveyed words of thanks from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, for the support that the country has provided for the restoration of peace.

“I spoke to the minister about the preparations for the peace summit, which will take place next June in Switzerland, and which will help to promote peace in Ukraine, which is now suffering from the Russian invasion. We want Mozambique to take part in this event,” he emphasised.

Also at the meeting, the Ukrainian special representative emphasised “the possibility of exchanges at the highest level, the expansion of the legal basis and the establishment of relations at the level of the countries’ parliaments to deepen the sharing of experiences”.

The announcement of interest in opening a Ukrainian diplomatic representation in Mozambican was made last year in Maputo, during a meeting between Dmytro Kuleba and the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
