Mozambique and the Netherlands Launch Water Management Project Costed at €2 Million

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, officially launched last Friday, April 1st, in Inhambane, the Mutamba River Basin Integrated Water Resources Management Project, also known as IWAMAMBA Project, which aims at ensuring a sustainable management of the water resources at the district level of Jangamo, Maxixe and Inhambane, with emphasis on groundwater.

This project is funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency RVO and national partners, with an implementation horizon of 4 years and budgeted at about 2 Million Euros, equivalent to 140 Million Meticais.

The IWAMAMBA project has, among several objectives, the rehabilitation and construction of rural springs to supply water to 30,000 people in the project area, the identification and mapping of aquifer exploitation zones to strengthen the water supply to the city of Inhambane and the establishment of a hydrogeological observation network to monitor the behavior of aquifers.
