The Governments of Mozambique and Russia have agreed to strengthen economic, legal, and contractual cooperation, as well as to deepen collaboration in humanitarian areas and in the fight against terrorism, the Russian Embassy in Maputo announced this Thursday, May 28, as reported by Lusa.
The understanding results from political consultations held on Wednesday (27) in Moscow between the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgy Borisenko, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Mozambican Communities Abroad, Maria de Fátima Simão Manso.
According to a note released by the Embassy of the Russian Federation, both parties reviewed “key issues” of bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on strengthening trade and economic relations and improving the legal and contractual framework between the two countries.
The document also states that mechanisms for the implementation of joint projects considered strategic across different development sectors were discussed.
During the meeting, representatives of both states also addressed cooperation in combating terrorism, international extremism, and other forms of transnational crime.
“Both sides discussed tasks related to cooperation in the fight against terrorism and strengthening interaction in humanitarian spheres,” the diplomatic note states.
Another point under discussion was the preparation of the third Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled for this autumn, considered by Russian authorities as an important platform for deepening relations between Moscow and African countries.
According to the Russian Embassy, the delegations also reaffirmed their interest in deepening political dialogue and coordinating positions in international multilateral forums.
Among the topics discussed were the reform of the United Nations Security Council and the situation in the Middle East.
“The two sides confirmed their willingness to strengthen coordination of actions to respond to current global and regional challenges,” the statement adds.
The strengthening of cooperation comes at a time when Mozambique is seeking to consolidate international partnerships in economic, security, and development areas.
