The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Margarida Talapa, advocated in Geneva, Switzerland, for the need to strengthen interparliamentary cooperation in light of the crises affecting various countries, particularly in Africa.
According to Talapa, managing regional conflicts, terrorism, violent extremism, economic crises, social inequalities, pandemics, and environmental challenges requires the joint efforts of various actors and powers, as well as the design of broader cooperation initiatives.
Speaking on Wednesday (30th) at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP), Talapa argued that through parliamentary diplomacy, parliaments around the world can promote initiatives that transcend borders and foster consensus-building, opening new avenues for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and for strengthening multilateralism.
“In the face of the challenges humanity is facing, it is essential to strengthen unity. To this end, we propose increased legislative exchange and the consolidation of new partnerships, as well as the intensification of democratic debate,” she emphasized.
Margarida Talapa further stated that it is everyone’s duty to promote peace, justice, and prosperity, leaving no one behind. “The signing of experience-sharing agreements with parliaments of African Union (AU) countries and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) has enabled the exchange of best practices in fighting corruption, strengthening justice, and protecting human rights,” she recalled.
The 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in close collaboration with the United Nations, and takes place from July 29 to 31, 2025, at the Palais des Nations (United Nations Office in Geneva).
