Mondlane to Announce New Measures for the First 100 Days of Government on the 17th

On a day marked by the swearing in of the new Mozambican President, Venâncio Mondlane addressed the people on Wednesday evening, 15 January, to announce that next Friday (17) at 15h00 he will present the measures to be taken in the first 100 days of governance, urging the new head of state to be attentive to take notes.

‘On Friday (17), I will present the measures to be carried out by the public sector, the private sector and Daniel Chapo himself. These measures will also indicate how the people should position themselves towards the new government,’ he said.

During a broadcast on his Facebook page, Venâncio Mondlane criticised Daniel Chapo’s inauguration, which he described as ‘closed and militarised’, in contrast to his own, which he said was ‘open and celebrated by the people’. The former presidential candidate also accused the current government of copying 95 per cent of his campaign proposals, ignoring the fight against corruption and using state resources irregularly during the election campaign.

Daniel Chapo was inaugurated as the fifth Mozambican President, the first born since the country’s independence, at a ceremony attended by around 2,500 guests.

On 23 December, Chapo, 48, was proclaimed by the Constitutional Council (CC) as the winner of the Mozambican President election, with 65.17% of the votes, in the 9 October general elections, which included legislative and provincial assembly elections, which Frelimo also won.

Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who does not recognise the election results, has called for three days of stoppages and demonstrations since Monday (13), contesting the swearing in of the elected members of the Mozambican Parliament and the investiture of the new Mozambican President.

The election of Daniel Chapo has been contested on the streets since October, with pro-Mondlane demonstrators demanding the ‘restoration of electoral truth’, with barricades, looting and clashes with the police.
