The government took another step in strengthening its international cooperation policy in the defense sector by holding five courtesy meetings granted by the Minister of National Defense, Cristóvão Chume, to accredited diplomatic representatives in the country and to a delegation from the Republic of Angola, the Ministry of Defense announced last Friday, May 16, in a statement.
According to the document, the meetings took place on Thursday (15) in Maputo and were part of Mozambique’s ongoing effort to deepen relations with strategic partners, promoting regional stability and strengthening institutional capacities in the defense sector.
Multilateral Cooperation for a Stronger Defense
In separate meetings in his office, Cristóvão Chume met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, Ferhat Alka; the High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa, Puleng Chaba; the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom, Helen Lewis; and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Mette Sunnergren. The meetings allowed for the exchange of views on the current state of bilateral cooperation and the identification of new areas of common interest.
The diplomatic day culminated with the reception of a delegation from the Republic of Angola, with whom ways to strengthen collaboration in the defense domain were discussed, reinforcing the history of brotherhood and solidarity between the two Portuguese-speaking countries.
Regional Stability as a Priority
According to the Ministry of National Defense, these meetings were part of a broader government strategy to consolidate partnerships that contribute to peace, security, and development in the region. The strengthening of international cooperation also aims to empower national institutions in matters of defense, security, and response to transnational threats.
The diplomatic representatives expressed willingness to continue collaborating with Mozambique, highlighting the importance of joint initiatives that promote not only security but also technical exchange, military training, and the development of infrastructure in the sector.
