Amid the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, five Mozambican citizens were temporarily held at Doha Airport in Qatar. The situation arose following attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran, which led to the closure of airspace in several areas of the region. Despite initial concern, diplomatic authorities confirm that no Mozambicans have been directly affected by the conflict.

According to statements from Isac Massamby, Mozambique’s ambassador to Qatar, given to O País and published on Wednesday, March 11, the situation is being closely monitored. The diplomat explained that, so far, no Mozambican citizens have been involved in incidents related to the ongoing regional crisis. Nevertheless, the embassy maintains permanent contact with the Mozambican community.
Data from the diplomatic mission indicate that of the 681 Mozambicans living in the Middle East, almost half reside and work in Qatar. The country was recently targeted by Iranian bombardments, in retaliation for Israeli and American attacks recorded since the last week of February. The escalation of tensions has heightened concern among foreign nationals in the region.
It was in this environment of instability that five Mozambicans traveling to different destinations were temporarily held at Doha Airport. The detention resulted from air traffic restrictions following the closure of parts of regional airspace. Airport authorities implemented security measures that caused delays and disruptions across several flights.
Despite the tense scenario, diplomatic authorities reiterate that no Mozambican citizens were involved in conflict-related incidents. However, some movement restrictions remain in force in certain areas of Qatar. These measures are part of local authorities’ efforts to ensure security during this sensitive period. In response, the Mozambican diplomatic mission has intensified contact with the national community residing in the country, making continuous communication channels a priority to monitor citizens’ situations and ensure that any need for assistance is quickly identified.
“Since the beginning of this Middle East crisis, we have created a platform that allows us to maintain constant coordination with community leaders, and as far as we know at this moment, everyone is safe and well,” said Ambassador Isac Massamby to Soico Televisão (STV). The diplomat also urged the Mozambican community to remain calm and continue following the safety instructions issued by local authorities.
Meanwhile, the Mozambican government has not announced an evacuation plan, as the conflict has already displaced around 100,000 people. Also speaking to STV, Prime Minister Benvinda Levi explained that “the government can only act depending on the availability of flights,” emphasizing that “airspace is restricted.” Egypt has already expressed willingness to serve as an exit route for Mozambican citizens, while Maputo continues to monitor the situation.
