Matola Municipality Establishes Cooperation with Local Government of Maryland, USA

A cooperation agreement has been signed between the city of Matola and Charles County in the United States of America. The agreement, signed this week, aims to promote institutional exchange and boost investment in areas such as trade, agro-processing, tourism, education, and culture.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the President of Matola’s Municipal Council, Júlio Parruque, during his official visit to the United States, and by Charles County Executive, Reuben Collins II, in a ceremony that marked “the beginning of a new phase in the relationship between the two territories.”

During the event, Júlio Parruque emphasized that this partnership could facilitate access to financing opportunities, particularly in support of youth and women entrepreneurship. “We are opening concrete channels for Matola’s entrepreneurs to grow based on successful international experiences,” he stated. The Mozambican official added that the collaboration with the American county also includes experience sharing in areas such as climate change adaptation and infrastructure management, especially stormwater drainage systems.

Parruque has been meeting with representatives from academic, business, and healthcare institutions in the county to explore concrete projects that could benefit the people of Matola.

With this agreement, Matola “strengthens its presence on the international stage and shows openness to collaborations that bring practical and sustainable solutions to local challenges.”

Charles County is an administrative division located in the State of Maryland, USA. In the U.S., “counties” are comparable in many ways to districts or provinces in African countries, although they have different functions and levels of autonomy.
