The former head of the Frelimo bench, and more recently Minister of Labour and Social Security, Margarida Talapa, was elected Chairperson of Parliament with 169 votes.
In Monday morning’s vote in the Assembly of the Republic, Maputo City, 210 deputies voted, including 171 from Frelimo and 39 from Podemos. This means that two Frelimo deputies did not vote for Margarida Talapa for the position of Chairperson of Parliament.
As a result, instead of the 171 votes expected, the visibly emotional Margarida Talapa was elected with 169 votes, enough to fulfil her new role.
In her first speech as Chairperson of Parliament, Margarida Talapa began by thanking her peers and the people for their trust in her to lead parliament. She said she was aware that she was taking over the presidency of the Assembly of the Republic at a challenging time. Even so, Talapa wants to show different results and guaranteed that she will do everything she can to ensure that the Assembly of the Republic remains a worthy representative of all Mozambicans, regardless of colour, race, gender, origin, social status or social status.
Margarida Talapa promises to make the Assembly of the Republic a stage of excellence in political debate, in order to guarantee the consensus that society expects, with harmony and tolerance.
‘Those of us who are elected today and those who, for whatever reason, will be elected later, promise to collaborate with the other sovereign bodies of the state and to obey the Constitution. We will work with all living forces to pacify society, with national unity and the strengthening of democracy, tolerance and a culture of peace. Regardless of whether we are from different parliamentary benches, we must look to the people,‘ pleaded the Chairperson of Parliament.
