Maputo: World Bank Provides $2.5M for School Construction

The World Bank has disbursed 160 million meticals (2.5 million dollars) for the construction of a new school on the same site as the Unit 24 Primary School, in the municipal district of Ka-Maxaquene, Maputo City, which was demolished last year due to its high level of disrepair.

According to the spokesman for the Maputo City Education Directorate, Samuel Menezes, quoted this Monday, 1 July, by the newspaper O País, “it’s likely that we’ll start this year, but we won’t be able to finish because it’s a tall building, and also because of the approaching rainy season, which is preventing the development we’d like”.

The organisation explains that the new school will have three floors, including 20 classrooms, compared to the previous ten. There will also be new toilets and an administration block.

The official explained that the project has already been submitted to the Directorate for School Infrastructure and Equipment, and is waiting for the tender to be launched”.
Local residents say that since the old school was demolished last year, the abandoned site has become a meeting place for criminals and some people have turned it into a rubbish dump.
