Fifty researchers from southern Africa are meeting in Maputo City to discuss climate change and the future of Africa. The meeting is expected to produce recommendations to minimise the impact of climate change on the continent.
Mozambique is looking to share its experiences in crisis management resulting from natural disasters at the event, but also to capitalise on experiences. For this reason, Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) has already set up a regional centre for climate crisis research and management, as Vithor Nywipwy, deputy director for postgraduate studies at UEM, explained.
“This centre deals with everything to do with agri-food issues, including climate change. This centre deals with researchers, with students, with resources and creates all the conditions for research to be carried out. So (…) this centre is another boat to get to the reality of the facts, explained the academic.”
The conference, which is taking place in Maputo City, has the motto “Towards local solutions for early prevention, warning and disaster risk reduction in the Southern African Development Community and beyond”. Roxan Cadiz, deputy director of the Faculty of Engineering at Eduardo Mondlane University, says it is important to invest in early warning systems to prevent damage to communities.
“If we could have these systems, these ways of predicting and being able to inform the community that the country is prepared to reduce these events (…) This is one of the objectives, to move towards research and try to bring local solutions that can be useful in the medium and long term.”
The event will result in decisions and recommendations for political decision-makers, civil society, academics and researchers.
