Just Two Presidents, Three Vice-Presidents and a Few Government Representatives: The List of Countries Represented at Chapo’s Inauguration

The Presidents of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, are the only ones who have confirmed their presence at the inauguration of Daniel Chapo as the new Mozambican President, an official source announced on Tuesday 14 January, quoted by Lusa.

‘We invited the heads of state of the Southern African Development Community and the Portuguese-speaking countries. Of these, confirmations have been received from two,’ said the vice-president of the Interministerial Commission for Major Events, Eldevina Materula, at a press conference held in Independence Square, where the event will take place.

In addition to the two heads of state, the source highlighted the presence of three vice-presidents, namely from Tanzania, Malawi and Kenya, as well as the prime ministers of Eswatini and Rwanda at Daniel Chapo’s inauguration, scheduled for Wednesday (15).

Eldevina Materula added that at least eight ministers from different countries will be at the event, including Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.

Asked by the media if Venâncio Mondlane, the second most voted presidential candidate who is leading demonstrations against the election results, had been invited, Eldevina Materula said that the event was ‘open to everyone’.

‘This is a ceremony that is open to the presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane as well as to the market mum. The presidential candidate is a Mozambican citizen and he is invited,’ added Eldevina Materula, assuring that the event’s security would be taken care of.
