Job Creation is Crucial for the Country’s Growth

The European Union (EU) representative in Mozambique argued, in the city of Beira, that job creation is the safest strategy for the country’s economic development.

“We consider that job creation is the safest way for sustainable and inclusive development in Mozambique,” said António Sánchez-Benedito.

The European diplomat was speaking Friday at a roundtable on exports and investment in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, a meeting promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the European Union in the city of Beira, in Sofala province.

According to Antonio Sánchez-Benedito, the European Union, as one of Mozambique’s main partners, intends to support the country towards development, although in a more complex context, taking into account the challenges imposed by the pandemic.

“The European Union is Mozambique’s main economic and development partner, but we also believe that we still have potential to continue growing together,” said António Sánchez-Benedito.

For the Minister of Industry and Trade, Carlos Mesquita, it is essential that Mozambique and the European Union maintain a constant dialogue to overcome the existing barriers in trade relations, especially in a context of restrictions.

“The European Union stands out as the main trading partner of our country, appearing in first place on the list, with 38% of total exports,” said Carlos Mesquita.

At Friday’s meeting, the parties reviewed the status of the economic cooperation consensuses reached in 2020 and the implementation point of the Economic Partnership Agreement between Mozambique and the European Union.

The parties agreed as a priority to support industrialization, aquaculture, fisheries, digitalization and trade facilitation by removing barriers that jeopardize investments.

They also agreed on the need for interaction and dissemination of the Economic Partnership Agreement at the local level and EU support.

The institutionalization and annual holding of the Mozambique and the European Union Business forum was another conclusion reached at the table of the Political and Sectoral Dialogue on Economy and Trade.

The annual Political Dialogue initiative is defined as an operational mechanism of political-economic diplomacy created with the aim of boosting cooperation between the two parties.

The meeting was held under the theme “Partnership Agreement between Mozambique and the European Union: Building Foundations for Sustainable Development”.
