The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, on Wednesday, 7 January, emphasised the need to “strengthen solidarity, love for others, harmony and unity among Mozambicans”, describing these values as essential for promoting collective well-being and the country’s development, reported the Mozambique News Agency (AIM).
According to AIM, the Head of State spoke during a brief intervention at the Provincial Nursery of Inhambane, in southern Mozambique, highlighting that a spirit of solidarity among citizens is a cornerstone for peaceful coexistence and for building integrated and sustainable development.
“What we want to convey today is this message of the need for solidarity among Mozambicans, love for others, harmony and unity, so that we can live in peace and togetherness. This is the main message,” said Daniel Chapo, accompanied by the First Lady, Gueta Chapo.
The President, who turns 49 today, chose to celebrate his birthday at the nursery, where he interacted with children, including those with special needs.
He explained that the decision to visit the nursery was inspired by the stories of resilience of children growing up there in conditions considered healthy, thanks to the dedication of the institution’s staff.
During the visit, Daniel Chapo shared the story of a child who survived an attempted abortion and subsequent abandonment in a septic tank. “We learned about our heroine, who survived an extremely difficult situation. Her mother attempted to abort her, but she was born, thrown into a septic tank, cried, was heard, rescued, and today she is alive, thank God, and growing,” he recounted.
The Head of State also mentioned a child whose mother has a mental disability, highlighting the role of the nursery staff in protecting and educating the children. “Our ‘aunties’ are taking care of our children, raising them with affection and responsibility,” he said.
Despite it being his birthday, Daniel Chapo considered it important to mark the day with a symbolic gesture alongside the children. “The children here need attention, and it is important that we also bring a gift, so that we can share, be together and celebrate this day in unity,” he stated.
It should be recalled that the Provincial Nursery of Inhambane was affected by a fire in December 2024, which destroyed several rooms and part of the furniture. The institution provides nursery and kindergarten services, assisting children, including those with special needs, in the province.
