Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that by the end of 2024 there will be 33.2 million Mozambicans, which means an increase of 6.2 million citizens in the last seven years, the Carta de Moçambique news portal reported on Thursday 8 February.
According to the organisation, the Mozambican population is growing every year, as the 2017 population census counted 27 million Mozambicans, of whom 13.3 million were men and 14.5 million were women. Of the total, 33.4 per cent lived in cities and 66.6 per cent (the majority) in rural areas.
According to the statistical authority, of the total number of Mozambicans expected by the end of this year, just over 16 million will be men and just over 17 million will be women, a difference of one million people. INE projections also indicate that of the 33.2 million Mozambicans, 11.5 million will be in urban areas and almost twice as many, 21.6 million citizens, will be in rural areas.
The data also shows that by the end of this year, 18.2 million Mozambicans will be in the 0-19 age bracket; six million in the 20-39 age bracket; 3.9 million in the 40-59 age bracket; and more than 1.3 million citizens will be in the 60-80 age bracket or older.
INE says that the population growth rate is 2.5%, life expectancy at birth is 56 years, the crude birth rate (per thousand people) is 36.7 people, the infant mortality rate (per thousand) is 63.9 children and the fertility rate (children per woman) is 4.8 children.
