A group of 41 young Mozambicans, from all provinces of the country, will attend mid-level technical-vocational courses in Portugal with partial scholarships at the Escola Profissional Agrícola de Carvalhais and the Escola Profissional de Artes da Covilhã, reported the Mozambican News Agency this Thursday, September 11.
The scholarships are the result of cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal. The courses include tourism, cuisine, pastry, oenology, restaurant and bar service, communication and marketing, among other complementary fields, for the 2025–26 academic year.
The Secretary of State for Tourism, Fredson Bacar, speaking at the students’ farewell ceremony this Thursday in Maputo, stressed the relevance of the training areas chosen.
“The tourism system in our country faces several challenges, one of which is the lack of qualified human capital. This deficit has weakened Mozambique’s competitiveness as a tourist destination, despite its strong potential. For this reason, the country is already working to ensure specialized training,” said Fredson Bacar.
“Since 2012, the National Institute of Tourism (INATUR), seeking to respond to the challenges imposed on the tourism sector in terms of human capital, has been pursuing synergies with institutions specialized in tourism, hospitality, and complementary areas abroad, particularly in Portugal. This has resulted in the awarding of a total of 71 scholarships to date,” he added. Bacar also emphasized the ongoing search for partnerships capable of boosting the tourism and hospitality segment through actions aimed at training human capital at all levels and dimensions.
Thus, the 41 young people heading to Portugal will join others already undergoing training in that country since 2023, and from 2026 onward, they will have guaranteed access to higher education.
The official encouraged the scholarship holders to dedicate themselves and make the most of the training opportunity, not only to achieve good grades but also to secure further opportunities.
In turn, the young scholarship recipients highlighted that the opportunity to study in Portugal represents the trust placed in them to contribute to Mozambique’s development.
“This opportunity is not only the realization of an individual dream, but also the expression of the trust our country places in us, so that we may return better qualified and contribute to strengthening and modernizing the tourism sector and the national economy,” they said.
