Mozambique’s National Maritime Institute (INAMAR) has inspected and issued a scientific research licence to the Norwegian vessel Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, which has commenced a 42-day maritime expedition off the coast of Mozambique.
The mission aims to assess the sustainability and stock levels of fishery resources, as well as to study marine ecosystems along the Mozambican coastline. The expedition is funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and has been authorised by the Mozambican government.
The inspection and verification of the vessel’s documentation were carried out by a team led by Acácio Beleza, acting director of INAMAR’s Maritime Inspection Division, accompanied by Daniel Ndeco, merchant navy captain at the Maputo Maritime Administration.
The delegation was received by the vessel’s captain, Tommy Seeffensen, who conducted a tour of the ship’s various compartments. The expedition has 18 scientists on board engaged in research activities along the Mozambican coast.
Over the course of the 42-day mission, INAMAR officials will accompany the expedition to ensure compliance with applicable maritime legislation. The oversight will also enable monitoring of sustainable management measures related to the blue economy.
Separately, the Maputo National Park announced in an official statement that the Dr. Fridtjof Nansen is currently in Mozambique and is navigating along the park’s coastal stretch as part of scientific research activities conducted in partnership with the Mozambique Oceanographic Institute (InOM).
The vessel’s presence in the coastal zone prompted the Maputo National Park to advise visitors, local communities, fishermen, and other beach and coastal area users not to be alarmed should they encounter the ship during its passage.
According to the park, the presence of the Dr. Fridtjof Nansen in the area is directly linked to the ongoing scientific research work being conducted along the coast.
The mission forms part of a broader effort to deepen knowledge of Mozambique’s fishery resources and marine ecosystems, carried out under the supervision of national maritime authorities.
