The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) warned on Friday of the possibility of a moderate tropical storm forming in the next 24 hours, due to the intensification of a low-pressure system currently located in the north of the Mozambique Channel.
According to the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM), the system continues to significantly influence weather conditions in the coastal provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado. According to INAM forecasts, the phenomenon could intensify further in the coming hours, generating winds with speeds between 63 and 88 kilometers per hour, which could affect maritime navigation along the northern coast of the country.
Although the system is expected to move towards Madagascar, away from the national territory, INAM is maintaining continuous surveillance of its trajectory and evolution. The institution recommends that the population closely follow the official communiqués and weather warnings issued by the competent authorities.
In another statement, INAM anticipates moderate to heavy rains in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado, with rainfall between 30 and 50 millimeters in 24 hours, which may reach higher values in some areas. The rains may be accompanied by thunderstorms and local gusts of wind.
In Nampula province, the districts of Moma, Larde, Mogovolas, Angoche, Liúpo, Mongicual, Meconta, Mossuril, Monapo, Nacala, Nacarôa, Memba, Erati, Murrupula, Rapale, Muecate, Mecuburi, and the city of Nampula are expected to be the most affected. In Cabo Delgado, bad weather is expected to affect Mecúfi, Chiúre, Balama, Montepuez, Metuge, Ancuabe, Quissanga, Ibo, Meluco, Macomia, Muidumbe, Mocímboa da Praia, Nangade, Palma, and the city of Pemba.
In addition, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the provinces of Zambézia and Niassa, extending the effects of the system to the north-central region of the country.
In view of the forecast of adverse weather conditions, INAM reiterates the need to take precautionary and safety measures, especially in areas at greater risk of flooding and thunderstorms.
