The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) warned today that the Tropical Depression located in the Mozambique Channel has evolved into a Moderate Tropical Storm, baptised as Jude, with the potential to reach the category of Tropical Cyclone in the next few hours.
According to the official statement, the epicentre of the storm was located at 14.8° S and 43.4° E, with winds reaching 85 km/h and gusts of up to 120 km/h. The storm is moving rapidly towards Nampula province, at a speed of 26 km/h.
INAM forecasts worsening weather conditions north of the 18° S parallel, with stormy winds of up to 100 km/h and gusts of 150 km/h. In addition, the sea turbulence could generate waves of up to 11 metres, posing a great risk to boats and coastal communities. The storm is also expected to cause heavy rainfall, exceeding 250 mm in 24 hours, accompanied by severe thunderstorms.
Faced with this threat, the meteorological and civil protection authorities recommend that people in potentially affected areas take precautionary measures, including:
Avoiding unnecessary travel in areas prone to flooding and landslides. Taking refuge in safe places, especially for residents in coastal areas. Increased caution for fishermen and sailors, due to the extremely rough seas. Constant monitoring of official meteorological warnings.
New updates are expected to be released tomorrow, 10 March, at 10am, to inform about the evolution of the phenomenon and possible direct impacts on the Mozambican coast.
