On Monday, March 23, the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) launched its new institutional website, a digital platform designed to improve public access to real-time meteorological and climate information. This initiative is part of the sector’s modernization and digital transformation efforts, allowing citizens, businesses, and institutions to access forecasts, alerts, and updated data more quickly and easily.

According to the agency, the new portal, still under development, serves as a strategic tool to strengthen the country’s early warning system, facilitating the dissemination of alerts regarding extreme weather events and contributing to the protection of lives and property. The platform is also expected to support key sectors, such as agriculture, transportation, and natural resource management, promoting more informed decision-making tailored to the challenges of climate change.

During the ceremony, held in celebration of World Meteorological Day, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation, Nilsa Miquidade, emphasized that meteorology plays a central role in the safety and well-being of the population, noting that weather monitoring is a global effort that requires international cooperation and data sharing.

According to her, extreme weather events remain among the greatest global risks, making investment in early warning systems essential. Citing international data, Miquidade noted that climate-related disasters caused economic losses of approximately $4.3 trillion between 1970 and 2021, in addition to claiming millions of lives, underscoring the need to strengthen prevention mechanisms.

The minister highlighted that the country “faces growing vulnerability due to its geographic location, as it is frequently affected by cyclones, floods, and droughts.” She also noted that the 2025–26 rainy season has already affected more than 800,000 people and caused hundreds of deaths, with significant impacts on infrastructure and socioeconomic development.

In this context, Nilsa Miquidade called for a strong commitment to digital transformation and the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve forecasting and the dissemination of alerts. “Weather information is essential for decision-making and risk reduction,” she stated.

For his part, INAM Director-General Adérito Aramuge emphasized the importance of the meteorological observation network in ensuring reliable forecasts. As he noted, the quality of the information depends directly on the continuous collection of data through weather stations, radars, and other equipment.

“Behind every forecast are millions of observational data points. Without this network, it is impossible to issue high-quality alerts,” he explained, calling for greater investment in infrastructure and technical capacity to strengthen climate resilience.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mozambique, Catharine Sozi, stated that early warning systems are essential, especially in vulnerable countries like Mozambique. “Forecasts save lives,” she emphasized, adding that recent weather events have demonstrated the effectiveness of warning systems in reducing loss of life.

Sozi praised the country’s progress in the fields of meteorology and risk management, highlighting Mozambique as a regional leader thanks to political leadership and international cooperation.

The celebrations took place under the slogan “Observe today, protect tomorrow,” emphasizing the need to invest in science, technology, and observation systems to anticipate risks and protect communities.
