Mozambique's National Meteorological Institute (INAM) issued a weather warning on Monday (10) for the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane, citing the passage of a cold front expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and a marked drop in temperatures.
According to the INAM bulletin, rainfall is forecast to begin by the end of Monday and may reach volumes of between 30 and 50 millimetres over a 24-hour period. The agency also flagged the possibility of intense precipitation exceeding 50 millimetres within the same timeframe.
In Maputo Province, the alert covers the districts of Matutuíne, Boane, Namaacha, Marracuene, Moamba, Magude, and Manhiça, as well as the cities of Maputo and Matola, all of which may be affected by the cold front's passage.
In Gaza Province, the warning applies primarily to the districts of Bilene, Limpopo, Chókwè, Chibuto, Guijá, Mandlakaze, Mabalane, Mapai, Massangena, Massingir, Chicualacuala, and Chigubo, in addition to the city of Xai-Xai.
In Inhambane, the phenomenon may affect the districts of Zavala, Inharrime, Panda, Homoíne, Morrumbene, Jangamo, Massinga, Funhalouro, Vilankulo, Mabote, Inhassoro, and Govuro, as well as the cities of Maxixe and Inhambane.
Beyond rain and strong winds, INAM is forecasting a significant decline in maximum temperatures across the southern region and parts of the country's centre, a drop also associated with the cold front's influence.
Meteorological authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to take precautionary and safety measures, particularly during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
INAM has further advised the public to monitor official updates and to avoid unnecessary travel during episodes of intense rainfall and strong winds in order to reduce exposure to the associated risks.
