Mozambican doctor Ilesh Jani was officially appointed chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC), succeeding the previous leadership at a critical moment for global public health.
The announcement was made via a statement released on Monday (2nd) by the GTFCC, following the committee meeting held on May 20th. Jani’s appointment, “a respected figure in public health and infectious disease control, was warmly welcomed by the international community.”
With a strong career in cholera control and the promotion of international cooperation, Ilesh Jani brings a valuable national perspective which, according to the GTFCC, will be crucial to “drive progress in the final five years of the Global Roadmap for Cholera Elimination by 2030.” “His leadership will be essential to face the complex challenges ahead and to strengthen our collective impact,” the statement reads. The GTFCC also highlights the crucial role the new leadership can play in responding to the worsening global cholera situation, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are not left behind.
Ilesh Jani is recognized not only for his technical and scientific work but also for his ability to mobilize multilateral efforts in the fight against infectious diseases. “His appointment also represents a significant milestone for Mozambique, placing the country at the center of strategic global public health decisions,” the document states.
